The Picture of Dorian Gray is an 1891 philosophical novel by Irish writer and playwright Oscar Wilde. First published as a serial story in the July 1890 issue of Lippincott's Monthly Magazine, the editors feared the story was indecent, and without Wilde's knowledge, deleted five hundred words before publication. Despite that censorship, The Picture of Dorian Gray offended the moral sensibilities of British book reviewers, some of whom said that Oscar Wilde merited prosecution for violating the laws guarding the public morality. In response, Wilde aggressively defended his novel and art in correspondence with the British press. Wilde revised and expanded the magazine edition of The Picture of Dorian Gray (1890) for publication as a novel; the book edition (1891) featured an aphoristic preface - an apologia about the art of the novel and the reader. The content, style, and presentation of the preface made it famous in its own literary right, as social and cultural criticism. In April 1891, the editorial house Ward, Lock and Company published the revised version of The Picture of Dorian Gray.

Eloquent and Intriguing
Kayla H. - 6 years 4 months agoI had been wanting to read this novel for what seemed like forever. I finally got to it earlier this year and was surprised at how much I was truly touched by it. This is the first of Wilde's work I have dug into, and I greatly admire his descriptions; the way he makes a scene or an object appear so vividly in one's mind. I highly recommend this read to all. #SummerReading

Aivy D. - 6 years 4 months agoI've never quite come across a story like this one. The plot itself is very unique, making it definitely worth a read. A lot of thought-provoking concepts are brought up in this book and it really does make you think twice. The true value of beautiful things in life will come into question over and over again as you continue to read. #SummerReading

A Macabre Draw
MS N. - 6 years 4 months agoThis is a classic that Oscar Wilde wrote in such a macabre fashion, I had to put it down several times to avoid the possibility of getting nightmares. The story of a young man who aspires to climb socially, he realizes that society is much more in-the-know than he realized and soon becomes a black sheep for his eccentricities. Told in old English, this is a sure-to-entice book. Quick #SummerReading but not for the faint-of-heart. I'll never hesitate to pick up more of this author's work.

Ann R. - 6 years 4 months agoI thought this book was very enlightening and gave me something to think about. Some of my friends did not like it, and did not see the value of seeing how an innocent person could become a cold blooded killer with some input from a person who egged him on.
