This dandy, who remains forever unchanged--petulant, hedonistic, vain, and amoral--while a painting of him ages and grows increasingly hideous with the years, has been horrifying, enchanting, obsessing, even corrupting readers for more than a hundred years. &&L/DIV&&R&&LP&&RTaking the reader in and out of London drawing rooms, to the heights of aestheticism, and to the depths of decadence, &&LI&&RThe Picture of Dorian Gray&&L/I&&R is not only a melodrama about moral corruption. Laced with bon mots and vivid depictions of upper-class refinement, it is also a fascinating look at the milieu of Wilde's fin-de-si cle world and a manifesto of the creed "Art for Art's Sake." &&L/P&&R&&LP&&RThe ever-quotable Wilde, who once delighted London with his scintillating plays, scandalized readers with this, his only novel. Upon publication, Dorian was condemned as dangerous, poisonous, stupid, vulgar, and immoral, and Wilde as a "driveling pedant." The novel, in fact, was used against Wilde at his much-publicized trials for "gross indecency," which led to his imprisonment and exile on the European continent. Even so, &&LI&&RThe Picture of Dorian Gray&&L/I&&R firmly established Wilde as one of the great voices of the Aesthetic movement, and endures as a classic that is as timeless as its hero. &&L/P&&R&&LP&&R&&LB&&RCamille Cauti, Ph.D.&&L/B&&R, is an editor and literary critic who lives in New York City. • 19th Century tale of narcissim and society

    John A. - 8 years 5 months ago

The Picture of Dorian Gray, Oscar Wilde's only 19th Century novel, is a landmark philosophical novel that has many lessons to teach us in 21st century America. The novel is a new spin on the Faust tale, in which Dorian Gray makes a wish that he would not age while the portrait created by his artist friend contains all the debauchery of his wild, aesthetic lifestyle. As a published author with several novels under my belt, I found many important writing lessons within this tale. I was also moved by the amazing abilities of Wilde and how the story simultaneously is an excellent yarn but also speaks truth about his own contemporary society. This is a true masterwork of literature, and a novel this HPB bookseller would recommend to anyone looking for a story that is amazing on multiple levels.
