Connie Willis' _The_Road_to_Roswell_ is a rom-com with a touch of alien abduction/first contact story. The alleged flying saucer crash at Roswell in 1947 forms the back story, while poking fun at many of the foibles of life in the 21st century: especially technology. Her characters are extrapolations of people we all know and have to deal with, her aliens--while not as loveable as E.T.--are benign and bring tension on humanity only through their inability to communicate. There are send-ups to dozens of westerns of the 40s, 50s, & 60s; to _Men_in_Black_, _The_Wizard_of_Oz_; and a little fun with exo-linguistics as found in Babel 17, The Sparrow, Story of Your Life, and Planet of the Apes. This is light entertainment--what we call a summer beach read, and cannot be compared with her hard SF works such as _To_Say_Nothing_of_the_Dog_ or _Doomsday_Book_. My biggest takeaway is a coherent picture of what happened at Roswell.
