Overview

Signed by the author on the endpaper. First edition, second printing. Book is bound in light grey cloth boards with faded gilt lettering along the spine. In a feat of investigative journalism and classical scholarship, a veteran Washington correspondent has gone back almost twenty-five hundred years to throw fresh light on the most famous free speech case of all time - the trial of Socrates. The book tries to unravel some of the mysteries behind the trial. It helps us to understand why Athens waited until Socrates was seventy before bringing him to trial, why he did his best to antagonize his judges, how narrow was the vote for his conviction, and how easily he might have won acquittal. The book is in good condition, with light bending of the boards, light fading along the top edge of the boards, and light soiling of the page edges. The dust jacket is in good condition, with moderate bumping and rubbing along the edges and several small tears along the top edge.
