When a mysterious illness claims the life of their scout master, a stranded boy scout troop must survive the wilderness, disease, and each other. They are cut off from the mainland with a stranger carrying a bioengineered disease that spreads like wildfire. This is a fatal sickness forces a quarantine and effectuates cut throat behavior as the troop strives to outlive the elements, the disease and each other. Unsettling, shocking and disturbing. Very fun read that is hard to put down.
HPB Staff ReviewIn Nick Cutter's contribution to the rising trend of adolescents vs. otherworldly monsters, a group of Boy Scouts takes a retreat to what turns out to be ground zero for a terrifying new plague. Clever, charming, and disgusting in the best way possible, this book is a must-read for all horror fans.
HPB Staff ReviewThe Troop by Nick Cutter is one of those horror novels that crawls under your skin and doesn't let go. Described in gritty, realistic detail, the prose will, in turn, make you sympathetic and in the next chapter, squirm with disgust. It's a book that must be experienced, even if you rather want to get as far away from it as possible afterward.
HPB Staff ReviewThis is not jump-scare horror, but it's quite gruesome, with intense body-horror and violence toward both kids and animals. Having said that, the violence is neither exploitative nor celebrated - it's presented as disturbing and sad. The characters are conflicted and make some really bad decisions, but it's simply because they are kids trying to do their best in an increasingly bad situation. #springpicks
A book that is more gross than scary. If you have a weak stomach, don’t read. Also, seems to lack a sympathetic main character. I read 225 pages and decided not to finish it.
