    This is the second of three books in the MaddAddam trilogy, but could be a stand alone read. Although I do recommend reading Oryx and Crake first for background info, and to better understand the history between characters. This one is told from the POV of a girl named Ren over 25 years. The 25th year is the year of the "waterless flood". Ren spends some of her childhood in a religious cult called The Gardeners. They are a peaceful group for the most part. They avoid violence, they do not kill (this they are vegetarians), they grow their own food and herbs, and celebrate every Saint's day. The story revolves around The Gardeners and Ren's connection with a few key members—Amanda, Toby, Adam One (leader of the cult), and Zeb. This takes place in a world that is already corrupt and falling apart. Society is run by a big corporation called CorpSeCorps. The Gardeners have created what seems like a safe community where other options are working for CorpSeCorps, scavenging and fighting for survival like the pleeblanders, or living in the compounds (gated, corporate living communities). CorpSeCorps is power hungry. They don't want any other organized groups/communities to compete with. They do all kinds of genetic experiments and eventually unleash a plague intended to wipe out humanity. What will happen to Ren, her best friend Amanda, and the people she looks up to? Atwood, yet again, depicts a horrifying dystopia that is within the realm of possibility.
