Maggie Hoskie is a monster hunter in Dintah, which was the Navajo reservation before the rising waters brought about by climate change drowned half the North American continent. She's hired to track down a kidnapped young girl, and the result of that hunt takes her on a quest to track down a witch who is creating man-eating monsters with the help of an apprentice medicine man named Kai Arviso. Maggie is a tired, angry, sharp-edged protagonist and she feels very human for it in spite of her superhuman abilities. Kai is a smooth-talking charmer who nonetheless fumbles and makes mistakes. Their interactions with each other and the people they meet along the way are excellently written and feel very real. Trail of Lightning is a very fun book and I'm looking forward to the next one in the series.
HPB Staff ReviewTake a step into the amazing world of Native American myths with this post-apocalyptic fantasy novel that hits very close to home. A cataclysmic event brought on by the complete neglect of the environment creates a new way of life where creatures once thought to be just legends come to power. Taking place in what was once the South West United States, Trail of Lightning is the perfect combination of action and fantasy that will keep you reading.
HPB Staff ReviewThis is the third book I've read in this series. I loved the first two. This book was not quite as enjoyable. I felt like the characters were always looking for the next clue. Not as action packed as the first two books. Not to say that I won't go on reading her books. I will!
