amazing. one of my favorite books of his. great storyline with a semi shocking but great finish
When the opportunity to review a new book by Nicholas Sparks presented itself, I jumped all over it. All my friends rave about his books, which had me firmly moving him on my want-to-read author list. Their sighing and swooning over his other titles had me begging to read him. So here I am with a copy of Two By Two to read, excited and ready to fall in love. I begin to read and... I'm bored. To be exact, I am really bored. The first few chapters were okay, getting to know Russell, getting into the flow of the story. The story is told from Russell's first person POV so you really get to know him through his thoughts and musings. Yet, I never really connected with him. I cannot help but feel the problem is because he is just too NICE. Now Vivian, she is an easy character to detest. In my personal opinion, her selfishness and the way she talks and manipulates Russell borders on emotion abuse. The way she treats him like a doormat, and him just constantly taking it, I just couldn't stand it. I honestly gave it my best to keep reading. I mean come on, this is the author who gave us The Notebook! Such a beautiful, powerful love story, which, was lacking from Two By Two. Love that is. I was expecting love and instead I got a slow, descending break-up that was just so dry. 30% in and already I was struggling to stay interested. I had such high expectations and now I feel so cheated. I pushed on a few more chapters and finally gave up. When I find myself not really caring whether or not the main character finds love or even what happens to him, I know it's time to stop. At this point, I am undecided if I will read more books by Mr. Sparks. Maybe his longtime fans will enjoy Two By Two, but I as a new fan did not.
