    Robert MacFarlane's way with words is truly a gift in the world of nature writing. "Underland" is one of his finest achievements, a monument to the power that massive geological formations like caves and glaciers hold in humanity's past, present, and future. You will feel the same claustrophobia and disorientation he felt as he explores deep underground, and experience that same allure for what he describes as a living organism. MacFarlane has made many arguments for inanimate parts of our planet in fact being living beings, with his writing on caves in this book being perhaps most persuasive of all.
