Overview

"A sequel to Carry On...every bit as fine as the first. A classic page-turner."-- Booklist, starred review

Simon Snow is back and he's coming to America!
The story is supposed to be over.

Simon Snow did everything he was supposed to do. He beat the villain. He won the war. He even fell in love. Now comes the good part, right? Now comes the happily ever after...

So why can't Simon Snow get off the couch?

What he needs, according to his best friend, is a change of scenery. He just needs to see himself in a new light.

That's how Simon and Penny and Baz end up in a vintage convertible, tearing across the American West. They find trouble, of course. (Dragons, vampires, skunk-headed things with shotguns.) And they get lost. They get so lost, they start to wonder whether they ever knew where they were headed in the first place.

With Wayward Son, Rainbow Rowell has written a book for everyone who ever wondered what happened to the Chosen One after he saved the day. And a book for everyone who was ever more curious about the second kiss than the first.

Come on, Simon Snow. Your hero's journey might be over - but your life has just begun.

  • Wayward Son Takes a Road Trip

If you enjoyed Carry On you will enjoy Wayward Son. We pick up with our favorite characters from the first book. Simon, Baz, Agatha and Penelope and follow along with them as three of the travel to America! Baz, Simon and Penelope take a magical road trip to California to save Agatha from a cult. They even make a pit stop at a Renaissance Faire where Simon gets to sport his wings in public and get to kill a couple Vamps. This book has much less of a Harry potter feel and more of a young adult contemporary novel voice. Baz and Simon struggle with their feelings for each other, Agatha gets broken up with and we meet a new mystery man who may know more about magical creatures than Penelope! This book may even be sillier than the first although does not compete in angst. Come join our wizard friends and they magically refill their gas tank and travel through the United States (which the didn't realize was so big!). #RainbowRowell #SummerReading #Vampires

  • Life After Destiny

Like most people, I adored CARRY ON and found this sequel fulfilling as a look at what life is like once the prophecy ends. Baz is the star and we get to see more nuance to Penny's character. Both are uncertain but doing their best to extricate the trio from the mess they're in, one of their own creation. I gave 4 instead of 5 stars because it feels very incomplete. We see them messing up and scraping by without much closure character-wise. Simon especially doesn't change much from being a bit sad and directionless. That said, I still finished it in a day because the pacing is amazing. #SummerReading

  • Enjoyable and immersive

I loved this book! Every one of Rainbow Rowell's novels has been enjoyable, but the Simon Snow books (plus Fangirl) make me feel the way I did as a teenager getting into fanfiction for the first time. I got lost in this book, and I hope there will be another addition to the Simon Snow series!
