Overview

"Like A Wrinkle in Time (Miranda's favorite book), When You Reach Me far surpasses the usual whodunit or sci-fi adventure to become an incandescent exploration of 'life, death, and the beauty of it all.'" --The Washington Post

This Newbery Medal winner that has been called "smart and mesmerizing," (The New York Times) and "superb" (The Wall Street Journal) will appeal to readers of all types, especially those who are looking for a thought-provoking mystery with a mind-blowing twist.

Shortly after a fall-out with her best friend, sixth grader Miranda starts receiving mysterious notes, and she doesn't know what to do. The notes tell her that she must write a letter--a true story, and that she can't share her mission with anyone.

It would be easy to ignore the strange messages, except that whoever is leaving them has an uncanny ability to predict the future. If that is the case, then Miranda has a big problem--because the notes tell her that someone is going to die, and she might be too late to stop it.

  • Exceptional sci-fy for a young reader

    Claire H. - 5 years ago

Rebecca Stead has such a good understanding of young people. In her Newberry Award-winning book, When You Reach Me, the protagonist, Miranda, is suddenly getting strange messages from an anonymous sender. The messages are oddly specific, and become ways to predict the future. Miranda doesn't know what to make of them at first, and she can't focus on them as getting through middle school is hard enough. With characters that feel like friends, plot points that keep you turning the pages, and the twist at the end which will leave you in tears, this book will warm your heart for years to come.

  • The most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious

    Richard N. - 6 years 7 months ago

Miranda knows her New York neighborhood inside and out. She knows which grocery store will fill her up with free goodies and at which street corner to cross in order to avoid the local crazy guy. Everything in her life is in its place until Miranda begins finding mysterious notes which portent to save her life and the life of her longtime, yet recently estranged, best friend Sal. Will she be able to figure out the mystery of the notes and still help her mother train to win The $20,000 Pyramid? "When You Reach Me" by Rebecca Stead is a beautifully poignant tale set in 1970s New York City. It is crafted with the same love of storytelling that made Madeline L'Engle's "A Wrinkle in Time" so great, and as such children and children-at-heart will love the fresh look on family, fortune, and fate that Stead provides.
