Overview

A New York Times bestseller and international sensation, this "stimulating and important book" (Financial Times) from the director of UC Berkeley's Center for Human Sleep Science is a fascinating dive into the purpose and power of slumber. As the Guardian said, Walker explains "how a good night's shut-eye can make us cleverer, more attractive, slimmer, happier, healthier, and ward off cancer."

With two appearances on CBS This Morning and Fresh Air's most popular interview of 2017, Matthew Walker has made abundantly clear that sleep is one of the most important but least understood aspects of our life. Until very recently, science had no answer to the question of why we sleep, or what good it served, or why we suffer such devastating health consequences when it is absent. Compared to the other basic drives in life--eating, drinking, and reproducing--the purpose of sleep remains more elusive.

Within the brain, sleep enriches a diversity of functions, including our ability to learn, memorize, and make logical decisions. It recalibrates our emotions, restocks our immune system, fine-tunes our metabolism, and regulates our appetite. Dreaming creates a virtual reality space in which the brain melds past and present knowledge, inspiring creativity.

In this "compelling and utterly convincing" (The Sunday Times) book, preeminent neuroscientist and sleep expert Matthew Walker provides a revolutionary exploration of sleep, examining how it affects every aspect of our physical and mental well-being. Charting the most cutting-edge scientific breakthroughs, and marshalling his decades of research and clinical practice, Walker explains how we can harness sleep to improve learning, mood and energy levels, regulate hormones, prevent cancer, Alzheimer's and diabetes, slow the effects of aging, and increase longevity. He also provides actionable steps towards getting a better night's sleep every night.

Clear-eyed, fascinating, and accessible, Why We Sleep is a crucial and illuminating book. Written with the precision of Atul Gawande, Andrew Solomon, and Sherwin Nuland, it is "recommended for night-table reading in the most pragmatic sense" (The New York Times Book Review).

It changed the way I think about my duration and quality of sleep.

  • Easy to Read, Hard to Accept

First off: this book is written for the general public in the easiest to absorb language possible. I loved that, though at times the author is giving us some of his hypothesis, not scientifically studied theories, so readers should recognize that some connections made in the text may be hypothetical. Regardless, reading this helps you make connections between your behavior and the behavior of those around you. One personal example is of the morning a man totaled my car while he was driving home from an overnight shift, claiming he "never saw me". Perhaps he truly didn't. Sleep deprivation is obviously an epidemic, I can recognize from my earliest childhood memories. School classmates would brag about how little sleep they got, as though whoever got the least sleep was the best student. This mindset has not ceased in the slightest since entering the work force, and those who sleep the least naturally are the ones who are always getting sick and needing to miss work! When will this cycle end? Walker writes this with a clear desperation to get society to see sense. He lists the dangers of little sleep, the benefits of sleep, then the danger of little sleep again! But at no point is this book repetitive or boring. It is a riveting text throwing study after study at you, reason after reason, to please, Go The F**k to Sleep! #SpringPicks

  • Mind Opening Read

This book covers interesting many topics regarding sleep, the importance, and the consequences of a lack of it. Not only does Matthew Walker explain the stages of sleep and the structure of it, but he explains all the different processes that are affected by it. This is the most engaging non fiction book I have read as he shares many of his and his colleagues research and the results. Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand the importance of sleep.

My son just graduated Med School & this book was on my his "Must Read" list, so I bought it for him, & I'm so glad I did! He read aloud much of it to me as he was reading it, because it was so interesting. This book will not put you to sleep! The author did his research & presented it in an easy read style.
