The characters in this book are all unpleasant, but rather undeveloped, and do reprehensible things without consequences. It was hard to care about their fate because they didn't seem to have any redeeming features and were unlikeable. The religious aspects were incomprehensible. It was also rather boring, but not long.
Wise Blood offers a scathing satirical look at postmodernism, as well as rural baptist culture. It’s hauntingly eccentric characters are grotesque and fascinating. The vitriolic espousing of ideals (or, more frequently, a lack of ideals) throughout the novel embody Flannery O'Connor's signature violent irony. The novel is rife with allegory and imagery that heighten the novel’s absurd, harrowing story. #SummerReading
