Overview

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - "Prepare to be entranced by this addictively readable oral history of the great war between humans and zombies."--Entertainment Weekly

We survived the zombie apocalypse, but how many of us are still haunted by that terrible time? We have (temporarily?) defeated the living dead, but at what cost? Told in the haunting and riveting voices of the men and women who witnessed the horror firsthand, World War Z is the only record of the apocalyptic years.

The Zombie War came unthinkably close to eradicating humanity. Max Brooks, driven by the urgency of preserving the acid-etched first-hand experiences of the survivors, traveled across the United States of America and throughout the world, from decimated cities that once teemed with upwards of thirty million souls to the most remote and inhospitable areas of the planet. He recorded the testimony of men, women, and sometimes children who came face-to-face with the living, or at least the undead, hell of that dreadful time. World War Z is the result. Never before have we had access to a document that so powerfully conveys the depth of fear and horror, and also the ineradicable spirit of resistance, that gripped human society through the plague years.

THE INSPIRATION FOR THE MAJOR MOTION PICTURE

"Will spook you for real."--The New York Times Book Review

"Possesses more creativity and zip than entire crates of other new fiction titles. Think Mad Max meets The Hot Zone. . . . It's Apocalypse Now, pandemic-style. Creepy but fascinating."--USA Today

"Will grab you as tightly as a dead man's fist. A."--Entertainment Weekly, EW Pick

"Probably the most topical and literate scare since Orson Welles's War of the Worlds radio broadcast . . . This is action-packed social-political satire with a global view."--Dallas Morning News

  • Excellent. If you're hesitant, give it a chance.

    Luke S. - 5 years 1 month ago

This book might get labeled as "splatter creature horror," and while there is plenty of that, the heart of "World War Z" is its real-world basis. There's politics, warfare, espionage, history, and intimacy in each and every tale. The details of the unfolding crisis are genius and utterly believable. To quote Entertainment Weekly, this novel is "addictively readable"--I devoured each story and never wanted it to end. #SpringPicks

  • A Zombie Classic.

I read this for the second time last year and I enjoyed even more than the first time. A zombie Classic. #SpringPicks

  • Great sci fi for those who don’t like sci fi

    Monica D. - 5 years 1 month ago

This is one of my favorite books. I’ve read it a few times and recommend it to anyone who will listen. Very interesting sci fi short stories on a zombie apocalypse—not usually my genre but it hooked me anyway! #SpringPicks

  • So much better than the movie

    John B. - 5 years 8 months ago

Loved the format of the book. Multiple short stories told from different perspectives in different parts of the world. Just purchased his new book & can’t wait to delve into the world of Bigfoot. #BannedBook

  • An revelant story about how to mess up a pandemic in the context of zombies

    Michael N. - 6 years ago

This was one of books I was asked to read for one of my college intermediate English class and I would have never thought the science fiction genre would be something to be taken seriously. I have actually not watched the film at all, so I can't give any comparisons to the two mediums, though based on clips from the internet, the movie does not have a main hero, but a series of people being interviewed post-zombie war. But going back to the book and in current times, what I'm seeing is almost similar to what has happened with the COVID-19 pandemic and it's a shame that people will never learn from history, so we end up a mismanaged and selfish governments, idiocy, and one's own bias that if you cover up an incident with a blanket, it will start to grow and yell at you, hurting and possibly killing more human lives than a virus. #SummerReading
